Torsten Erwied studied dual Business Economics at BASF SE and at the University of Applied Sciences Ludwigshafen. After his studies he gained more than 20 years of experience in the packaging industry in different positions as Sales and Key Account Manager. He has been managing the Sales Department of the packaging division at Herrmann Ultraschall in Karlsbad since 2017.

You hold a speech at the 6th European Stand-up Pouch Conference of Innoform. What is the main statement of your presentation?

Applications with convincing ROI by ultrasonic sealing technology of today and tomorrow.

Which audience do you wish and why?

Responsibles for production and quality in the packaging industry (production manager, managing director, quality manager).

How do you assess the development of the stand-up pouch (SUP) as a whole concerning your field of activities?

SUP prevail more and more for certain applications; especially in the field of filling wet products, we consider the SUP with a high relevance for our ultrasonic sealing technology. We expect an above-average growth in this field.

How do you assess the ultrasonic technology for the stand-up pouch regarding a complete sealing with this technology?

We consider the ultrasonic sealing technology – applied with wet products – to be alternativeless if high quality standards to the sealing are required.

What are the reasons for the continuous growth of the stand-up pouch  market?

We consider the following trends as main reasons:

    • Convenience packaging – Ready to eat
    • Trend for single portions
    • Substitution of tin cans and aluminium packagings
    • New requirements to the supply chain, for example due to E-Commerce

How do you classify the stand-up pouch regarding the demand for circular economy?

The SUP has the potential to sustainably support the circular economy if it is made of recyclable mono material. This is another approach for the technical advantages of ultrasonic sealing technology.

Which SUP concept did impress you most?

We are most impressed by the zipper for the reclosable SUP, for example for grated cheese.

What do you recommend to a brand owner who wants to start with pouches?

We recommend an intensive analysis of all quality requirements made on oneself as producing company and later fulfilled for theses pouches. Furthermore, it is important to make proper arrangements with the film/material supplier, the machine manufacturer as well as the supplier of the sealing technology.

And finally a personal questions: What inspires you besides your professional activities?

Cycling through the bends on the motorized two-wheeler in the beautiful Black Forest.

  • Speaker’s interview with Marco Izzi about new PP materials for sterilisable stand-up pouches for food

Speaker’s interview with Marco Izzi about new PP materials for sterilisable stand-up pouches for food

Marco Izzi works as “Application Development and Technical Service Engineer” at LyondellBasell in Germany. His field of activities includes the development and market launch of new and improved polyolyfine types, in cooperation with R & D, marketing, sales and Asset Management. Furthermore, he is responsible for the support of polypropylene film manufacturers.
In his professional career he worked as Quality and F & R Manager at Manuli Stretch Deutschland GmbH and Berry Plastics GmbH.
He has a degree in Technical Engineering at the University „La Sapienza“ (Rome) and a MBA at the „PFH – Private University of Applied Sciences“ (Göttingen).

You hold a speech at the 6th European Stand-up Pouch Conference of Innoform. What is the main statement of your presentation?

Challenges and solutions for polypropylene types used in the film extrusion for retortable stand-up pouches.

Which audience do you wish and why?

Film manufacturers and brand owners. On the one hand, they are closer to the consumer in the value chain and know therefore their requirements better than we do. On the other hand, we need a feedback regarding our newly developed products to be able to improve them.

How do you assess the development of the stand-up pouch (SUP) as a whole concering your field of activities?

The growth rate of the SUP is esteemed higher than the growth of the plastic consumption in the packaging industry. The development projects in the field of PP films at LyondellBasell are considerably influenced hereby. Only in the “RETORT“ area three new types of polypropylene have been introduced into the market, even though the reducing complexity plays an important role in every company due to efficiency reasons.

What is the main benefit for PP stand-up pouches in your opinion?

Convenience. Light weight, easy recycling (but this does not mean that it is the most environmentally friendly way of disposal), easy handling, optical attraction.

What are the reasons for the continuous growth of the stand-up pouch market?

The key drivers are the new markets (for example Far East), because new packaging machines are acquired. In Europe, old packaging lines are changed – slowly, but constantly. It is more common to change at first the packagings for product line extensions. This change takes place slowly, but it is unstoppable.

How do you classify the stand-up pouch regarding the demand for circular economy?

The stand-up pouch in its usual composition (laminate) means a problem for the circular economy. The requirements for „Convenience“ , however, are a main driver for research. The recyclable SUP will come – slowly, but surely.

Which SUP concept did impress you most?

High barrier due to transparent and thin lamination from Japan. The film is still made of PET, but the PP solution is under development and could mean a breakthrough in the recyclability of retortable stand-up pouches (personal opinion).

What do you recommend to a brand owner who wants to start with pouches?

To involve all participants of the supply chain in the product development (film manufacturers, polymer producers) to achieve the best results regarding mechanical, optical and thermal properties as well as barrier functions.

And finally a personal questions: What inspires you besides your professional activities?

Running, sports in general, salsa dancing.

You hold a speech  at the 6th European Stand-up Pouch Conference of Innoform. What is the main statement of your presentation?

We would like to present the results of a long-time development project and show that we succeeded – on this development platform – in developing a really sustainable and recyclable concept for pouches together with partners like Mondi Consumer Packaging GmbH, the Green Dot and EPEA Switzerland (Cradle-to-Cradle®).

Which kind of audience to you wish and why?

To be able to establish and develop the new market standard, we need participants of various fields of the FMCG industry.

How do you assess the development of the SUP as a whole concering your field of activities?

The SUP has an essential meaning for the future. SUP’ s will be offered more and more as primary packaging as well as for refilling concepts.

W&M decided upon the topic “Packagings and sustainability”. What is – in your opinion – the most important benefit for your company and the customers as a whole?

The pouch for detergent has established as primary packaging at our customers, and due to its “soft” feel, a very good residual emptying and a small weight it is very popular.

What are the reasons for the continuous growth of the stand-up pouch market in your opinion?

    No answer.

How do you classify the stand-up pouch regarding the demand for circular economy?

Current standards for SUP’s made of multilayer plastic compounds do not fulfil the condition for a simple, cost-efficient mechanical recycling. Various plastics and bonding agents prevent a sorted and above all simple recycling. For this reason, we strive for a new standard with our concept. Furthermore, the labelling of multilayer compounds has to become more clearly and explicitly for the customer.

Which SUP concept did impress you most?

    Our common development.

What do you recommend to a brand owner who wants to start with pouches?

To have a close look at all steps of the process chain – from film manufacturing up to classification and mechanical recycling. The knowledge profit for the classification of the SUP concept will be enormous!

And finally a personal question: What inspires you besides your professional activities?

Human reason and the claim to completeness when using knowledge!
