Interview with Thomas Fischer (Herrmann Ultraschall) about the 5th European Stand-up Pouch Conference

You will give a presentation during the 5th European stand-up pouch conference. What is the basic premise of your presentation?

When using the US sealing technolgoy, the best possible quality level for the head seam is guaranteed in the field of SUP packagings. At the same time, potentials to reduce the costs will be created and the output will be increased.
Ultrasonic sealing for SUP can verifiably improve the quality of your production, as far as the quality of the head seam is concerned.
The ultrasonic sealing technology has proved to be the standard sealing technology for many SUP applications.
The digital ultrasonic generator with its interfaces, measurement values and options for an automated adaptation to the changing environmental influences is the basis for industry 4.0 packaging processes.
Future one-layer SUP get better sealed by ultrasonic than by thermal sealing technologies.

What kind of audiences do you hope for and why?

Food packers who are responsible for the production processes and quality; those, who develop packagings; manufacturers of packagings and packaging materials; product manager for packaging lines.
Realisation of potentials of the ultrasonic technology for the improvement of the sealing quality.
Early integration of the ultrasonic technology when qualifying the packaging materials and packagings.
Wow effect of higher benefits for the final customers and differentiation offer new chances in the market.

How do you estimate the development of the pouches (SUP) relating to your activities?

The positive development of the SUP as packaging type confirms our strategy to continue the development and marketing of the main competence in the field of the SUP head seam.
The ultrasonic technology has established as sealing for the critical head seam as it is often moistened with the product, and is no longer used as alternative but as standard today.
The request to optimize the packaging processes leads to an increasing number of modifications in the market from thermal sealing technologies to ultrasonic sealing.
The manufacturers of packagings and packaging materials have realised the meaning of ultrasonic sealing and optimise their product for the ultrasonic sealing technology. The collaboration between manufacturers of packagings and packaging materials and specialists in ultrasonic sealing has been effected.
The demand for quality-related data and intelligent supervision of sealing processes increases.
Complete solutions from one source – the demand for ultrasonic sealing modules is more and more required.

Interview with Klaus Renz (expe.renz) about the 5th European Stand-up Pouch Conference

You will give a presentation during the 5th European stand-up pouch conference. What is the basic premise of your presentation?

The presentation will illustrate an example of a stand-up pouch with a spout to show the possibility fulfilling the requirements of mechanical recycling using a “mono material” PP stand-up pouch. A relevant part will include sealing with ultrasonic tools.

What kind of audiences do you hope for and why?

I would like to have an audience that consists of raw material suppliers, extrusion equipment manufacturers, printing specialists, marketing experts and end-users for discussing all the questions which may emerge.

How do you estimate the development of the pouches (SUP) relating to your activities?

Innovative print, laminating and sealing technologies are more and more requiring a consulting competence, in particular with regards to stand-up pouches.

What are your recommendations to a brand owner who is going to start with pouches?

In my experience, the annual stand-up pouch conference offers a very good market overview with a range of end-use applications. Also the high level of presentations and the well informed audience are reasons for having a good opportunity to inform and discuss the different aspects regarding pouches.

Which innovations are of the greatest interest to you, especially in the flex pack market – disregarding the SUP?

In my opinion there are interesting opportunities resulting from the high flexibility through digital printing. In addition, a growing use of transparent barrier films can be expected. And for sure, the mechanical recycling of films with a barrier will become more and more relevant.

  • Interview with Colin Smith (Sun Chemical SA) about the 5th European Stand-up Pouch Conference

Interview with Colin Smith (Sun Chemical SA) about the 5th European Stand-up Pouch Conference

You will give a speech during the 5th European Stand-up Pouch Conference of Innoform. What is the quintessence of your presentation?
The growth of the high performance printed pouch is not in question – what is open for discussion is how you print it ……….and how you laminate it …….

Historically it was only possible to meet the demanding retort specifications by gravure printing with PVC ink technology and laminating with solvent based adhesive but the landscape is beginning to charge , latest developments in printing ink technology now opens the door for flexo printing – meaning cost competitive smaller print runs are now possible .

Going forward developments in adhesive technology will also open the door for the possible use of solvent free or even water based adhesive technology which will in turn increase the options and improve the competitive situation for the printer convertor. A little further away but most definitely on the horizon is digital printing for high performance pouches , with the appropriate support products – Primers & Adhesives – it will soon be possible to think about ultra small run sizes and even personalization of this fast growing, but technically demanding area of the packaging market.

Which kind of audience do you wish for and why?
I hope to see the major decision makers from the European flexible packaging
industry, these are the people who have driven the industry to where it is today – the most demanding and fastest changing market in the world ……..

How do you estimate the development of the pouches (SUP) regarding to your activities?
Introduction and acceptance of the Pouch format has grown tremendously over the past ten years, we are now at the stage that purely having a product packed in a pouch is not a differentiator – to stand out brand owners need that something extra – our job is to demonstrate that “ extra”, be that graphics, special effects or cost benefits .

What are your recommendations to a trademark owner who is going to start with pouches?
Honestly by now, I believe most brand owners are very well aware of the well documented benefits of pouches – in summary the ability to “ lightweight “ and increase shelf appeal without adding additional cost or complexity .

Which innovations are of great interest to you, especially in the flexpack market – disregarding the SUP?
I really believe that the FLEXO printing of  high performance pouches will fuel further growth by making smaller run sizes more cost effective .

  • Interview with Hein van der Reek (BillerudKorsnäs Germany GmbH) about the 5th European Stand-up Pouch Conference Standbeutel-Konferenz

Interview with Hein van der Reek (BillerudKorsnäs Germany GmbH) about the 5th European Stand-up Pouch Conference Standbeutel-Konferenz

You will give a speech during the 5th European Stand-up Pouch Conference of Innoform. What is the quintessence of your presentation?
Why on earth would we use paper in SUP’s?

Which kind of audience do you wish for and why?
We would like to talk to both converters of flexible packaging as to brand owners.

How do you estimate the development of the pouches (SUP) regarding to your activities?
We see a growing demand for paper in pouches. The stretch and strength of the paper make it possible to put spouts and embossings in. Next step is to get barriers / sealing agents in the paper. For non-barrier goods this is already achieved in co-operation with BOSCH. Other co-operations with machine- and laminate producers are ongoing.

What are your recommendations to a trademark owner who is going to start with pouches?
To brand-owners who want to start with pouches we say; consider how you want to look on the shelf. What will your image be?

Which innovations are of great interest to you, especially in the flexpack market – disregarding the SUP?
Development in paper are moving forward rapidly and we try to understand the need of the industry. Therefore we might develop transparent paper, with or without specific barriers.

  • Interview with Alexander van Puijenbroek / Qipack about the 5th European Stand-up Pouch Conference

Interview with Alexander van Puijenbroek / Qipack about the 5th European Stand-up Pouch Conference

You will give a speech during the 5th European Stand-up Pouch Conference of Innoform. What is the quintessence of your presentation?
Qipack offers for the first time in history a 100% in-line seal inspection technology, which offers a full seal process control and makes it possible to find packaging failures before they become a problem, before they leave the factory and get to the consumer.

Which kind of audience do you wish for and why?
Most logic audience, I think of, are representatives of the packaging industry, food- and pharma industry and packaging machine builders.

How do you estimate the development of the pouches (SUP) regarding to your activities?
The stand-up pouch and similar concepts will become even more popular and will also be used in a lot of new applications. Also the more common products will be packed in pouches.

What are your recommendations to a trademark owner who is going to start with pouches?
Make sure your product fits well with the pouch concept. Will it be easy to use, good shelf proposition, will the product get the right protection/shelf-life, will production capacity be OK, etc…? I also would like to advice to use in-line seal inspection, as I see many suppliers struggling with quite some customer complaints and high costs. This can be avoided and the output of the pouch lines will become higher (therefore cheaper too).

Which innovations are of great interest to you, especially in the flexpack market – disregarding the SUP?
Beside our in-line quality control, which I think is new in this business, I think of alternative shapes, re-closure options and design/printings will continue to improve and change. I also think that food suppliers will go more to wall to wall production. They will less produce their own packaging/pouches, but a pouch suppliers will take responsibility and care of it on site.
